June 11, 2009 -- posted by Karen

Although we had a pretty awful night last night and didn’t get a great sleep, we still managed to have a wonderful day. We were up early because of the bad beds and at the lakeside before 7 am. Suddenly, we heard a strange noise and saw a hippo’s head emerge from the water just a little ways from where we were sitting on the beach. It was amazing to see. Every five minutes or so it would come up for air and we would get another look at it. It didn’t seem in a hurry to go anywhere and later hotel workers told us that the hippos come up and eat the grass in front of the cottages during the night.

After breakfast, we decided to take a drive to a lakeside city called Awassa. Fanosie was especially eager to see it since he had never been there before. It took about 90 minutes to get there but it turned out to be a very pleasant city. We spent some time at the lakeshore and ended up taking an hour long boat trip to see even more hippos! Pretty amazing creatures. We got back to Langano in time for another swim before the sun set.

One more night in these awful beds!
